FAQ - What Is the Future of the PMBOK?
How much longer will the pmbok exist?
The answer: forever.
The PMBOK is not just the Waterfall Body of Knowledge. The PMBOK is the Project Management Body of Knowledge.
For several years, we have been working from the PMBOK Fifth Edition. It already contained some Agile principles, such as Progressive Elaboration and various examples of iteration.
In September, 2017, the Sixth Edition was released. This new edition includes even more Agile processes, to manage change and uncertainty better.
Near the time of the release of PMBOK Version Six, PMI released its first branded Agile body of reference. Its title: The Agile Practice Guide.
Moving forward, project managers will increasingly embrace a hybrid Waterfall-Agile methodology.
- For predictable components of the project: top-down, waterfall processes
- For unpredictable or constantly-changing components: Agile processes
For their hybrid projects, project managers have two complimentary "best practice" reference guides from PMI:
- The Project Management Body of Knowledge
- The Agile Practice Guide
